LISTENING DIFFERENTLY
July 28, 2005
Dear friends, This has been a month of interiority for me. In my case, this doesn’t mean that I am not occupied, but it means that I conduct myself differently through all my tasks. I would like to share a meditation practice you, one that I have been using very much at this time. In the practice of Nada Yoga, it is vital to train the mind to listen The challenge though is to listen without thinking or describing or associating what one is listening to. In other words, we must learn to listen without interfering with the process of listening. Through this method we can absorb the full impact of energy that is present in the timbre, intensity, pitch, intelligence, power and vibratory quality of a sound. When we learn to listen in this manner, a vast spaciousness opens up in the field of our awareness. As our consciousness begins to expand exponentially in this altered state, it is invaluable to have at our disposal the community of mantras we have each personally built. All the techniques of sonic mysticism that we have assimilated through the streams of Shabda, Shakti and Bhava Yoga are at our disposal to sculpt and refine the energy we encounter on our interior journey of expansion. I hope to see some of you at Hollyhock on Cortes Island in British Columbia next month. This is for the Ecstasy of Chant weekend. I have described Hollyhock’s pristine environment in several of my earlier communications to you. I can’t help feeling that this chanting retreat is going to be special as it will be filled with many of the new insights that have been coming to me in my recent studies and practice of sacred sound. As always, I try and keep up with this regularly, for what use is it to teach others something that I don’t regularly practice and know the value of firsthand? I hope these summer months are encouraging to your own practice. I often feel that the heat outside the home is a good metaphor for the heat that should be built inside the heart. The fire of knowledge and spiritual practice must always be kept burning brightly. May yours shine like the sun.
