REACHING OUT TO CHILDREN

June 13, 2006

In this issue:
Worthy charitable organizations helping children (including
Kids with Cameras)
Upcoming California events next month: (including Moving
into Silence Retreat)
Reviews and Radio Interviews (including Strategies for
Living)

Dear friends,

I hope this finds you well and enjoying this glorious
summer. Doing our travels in northern India we often came
across children begging in the street. While this is often
a syndicated form of industry, (which means, giving them a
handout going to the people who are using them for this
purpose), there are wonderful organizations doing great
work to help kids in India (and worldwide) that are truly
worthy of support. Many of our participants asked us to
research such charitable organizations in India,
particularly those that help children, so there are two
that we are sharing in this newsletter. We would like to
invite everyone on our mailing list to know about and
support these amazing institutions.

BORN INTO BROTHELS: Please watch Born into Brothels”. You
can rent the film from Netflix.com or Blockbuster. This is
a powerful documentary on the lives of children who grow up
in the red light district of Calcutta in India and it is a
tribute to the resiliency of childhood and the restorative
power of art. This film is a portrait of several
unforgettable children who live in the red light district
of Calcutta, where their mothers work as prostitutes. Zana
Briski, a New York-based photographer, gives each of the
children a camera and teaches them to look at the world
with new eyes. www.kids-with-cameras.org
helps these children and others around the world.

ASHA: In the summer of 1991, Asha (an organization) was
born at the University of California in Berkeley when a few
Indian students got together to think of ways in which they
could play a role in the development of India, the country
of their origin. These young people shared the belief that
basic education is a critical requisite and an effective
catalyst for social and economic change in India. The group
was named Asha to represent the hope that had brought these
individuals together and the hope that they aimed to bring
into the lives of children in India. In that summer of
1991,
Today, there are over 66 Asha chapters worldwide: 45 in the
US, 14 in India, and 7 in Europe, Singapore and Australia.
Volunteers in each of these chapters take personal interest
in identifying education-related projects in India, and
supporting them through funds and other means. Here are
projects in the areas that we visited during our travels
this year:

INTEVIEWS;

I have been doing a number of radio interviews, including
several interviews for Internet Radio, in connection with
the release of my paperback which has been getting some
wonderful reviews.

STRATEGIES FOR LIVING: My most recent interview was with
David McMillian on Strategies for Living, an Internet Radio
Station. You can hear a lot of contemporary applications of
my work though this segment, which you can also share with
friends. David is a wonderful interviewer who has featured
Bernie Siegal, Thomas Moore, Matt Fox, Neil Douglas Walsch,
Dan Millman and many others on his show. Several of these
are archived on his website www.strategiesforliving.com.
Just click on the microphone on his home page.
